Speech Connections, Seacoast is currently offering social skills classes for children and adults with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorders, social-pragmatic disorder, or high functioning autism. Classes are geared towards those who are verbally competent but need social skills training and practice to boost their social competence for friendship building, community participation and success in the work place. Classes are offered at various times, with group sizes of 4-6 participants. Ms. Lister also facilitates an adult social skills group on the second Friday of every month, from 6:30 - 8:30pm.
Skills targeted include gaining and sustaining attention, topic control, active listening to communication partners, conversational skills, nonverbal skills (reading facial and body language, tone of voice and implied meaning of sarcasm versus playful teasing, etc.), perspective taking, negotiation and self advocacy. All class participants are screened to meet the criterion for group inclusion so that peers are compatible and group dynamics are geared for success.
The cost of each session is $240.00 and includes one session for parent training that is individualized to meet the needs of specific parents of group participants. This aspect will foster carry-over of skills to the home and community. For more information contact Jocelyn Lister at 603.319.1618, or use our online form here.
